The semiconductor industry in Shanghai faces considerable environmental challenges stemming from its multi-stage manufacturing processes. From the production of raw wafers to the final packaging of chips, the creation of contaminants is extensive, including large volumes of wastewater, air pollutants, and solid waste.

Wastewater streams often contain acidic or alkaline compounds, fluoride, and organic matter, resulting from cleaning, etching, and chemical-mechanical polishing processes. For instance, fluoride-containing wastewater is frequently produced due to the use of hydrofluoric acid, while acid-base wastewater is generated throughout the integrated circuit manufacturing stages, particularly during cleansing. Wastewater from electroplating processes can also contain heavy metals.

Air pollution is another significant concern. Processes such as photolithography, etching, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) release various volatile organic compounds (VOCs), acidic and alkaline gases, and potentially toxic and greenhouse gases like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) into the atmosphere. The use of these PFCs, while necessary for certain operations, significantly contributes to global warming.

Semiconductor manufacturers are actively seeking solutions to these environmental issues. They are focusing on optimizing their production processes by reducing material and energy consumption, enhancing the purity of raw materials, and minimizing the generation of wastewater and waste gases. Some companies have already successfully replaced older, environmentally harmful processes, such as electroplating, with less polluting alternatives.

The industry's drive towards cleaner production echoes the global trend of more environmentally conscious industrial design. While the challenges are substantial, continuous innovation and process improvement are crucial for the sustainability of the semiconductor sector.
