Senphonix Receives NIH Grant for Continuous Vital Signs Monitoring

Minneapolis-based medical technology startup Senphonix has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), through its National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This award represents a significant milestone for the company, marking its second federal research grant in recent weeks.

The SleeveSense platform is designed for continuous monitoring of patients' vital signs over extended periods, including days, weeks, or months. The NIH funding will support clinical testing of the platform's software, cloud and database scaling, and cybersecurity enhancements aimed at achieving SOC 2 Type II readiness. The goal is to reduce the burden of manual vital sign checks and improve patient care in both hospital and home settings.

The system aims to address persistent and costly healthcare challenges associated with episodic and manual vital sign measurements, potentially reducing hospital readmissions. It seeks to alleviate nurses' workload, enable earlier detection of patient condition changes, and support new remote patient monitoring service models.

SleeveSense is described as a comfortable sleeve intended for long-term wear, both in and out of hospital settings, providing clinical-grade measurements. It features wireless charging, eliminating the need to remove the device. Senphonix states the system's deployment is designed to integrate with existing healthcare workflows without requiring significant upfront capital investment from hospitals.

The company reports strong interest in its SleeveSense platform. The recent federal grants, combined with private and state support, and indicated demand from nurses and chief financial officers, suggest market recognition of the solution's potential.
