Seoul Air Flight Experiences Baggage Fire

A Seoul Air flight, designated RS511, encountered a smoke and fire incident within its passenger baggage at Seoul's Incheon International Airport on September 24 around 9:00 PM. The aircraft was preparing for departure to Da Nang, Vietnam, when smoke and flames were detected emanating from a bag stored beneath a passenger's seat.

The affected bag contained a power bank, believed to be the source of the fire. Cabin crew extinguished the visible flames using bottled water, and airport firefighters subsequently managed the scene. The flight was carrying 221 passengers and 7 crew members. Some passengers reported respiratory discomfort following the incident, though no hospitalizations were required.

All passengers were disembarked from the aircraft after the fire. A replacement flight departed with 219 passengers, while two passengers voluntarily canceled their travel plans. Seoul Air has stated its intention to further strengthen safety control measures in response to the event.

South Korean airlines universally prohibited the use of power banks during flights in February. Passengers are still permitted to carry power banks, provided their charging ports are insulated or the devices are stored in separate pouches and remain readily accessible. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of portable power devices on aircraft, particularly following a significant fire at Busan Gimhae International Airport in January of the previous year.
