Sephora initiates global campaign to combat appearance-based discrimination

Sephora has introduced Project Hearts Not Hate, a global initiative focused on tackling appearance-based discrimination. The move follows an Ipsos BVA study commissioned by the retailer, which found that 70% of adults and 85% of 18- to 24-year-olds have experienced judgment regarding their physical appearance. Data also suggests that a significant portion of those affected alter their social behavior or avoid public spaces as a result.

To address the issue, Sephora is partnering with the non-profit organization Right To Be. Starting in 2027, the company will roll out an employee training program called Sephora H.E.A.R.T.S., designed to equip staff with the skills to prevent and intervene in instances of harassment or exclusion.

The campaign launch included charitable donations to Right To Be and local non-profits, funded by proceeds from Sephora Collection product sales. The initiative signals an attempt by the brand to shift industry standards and address how beauty retail influences social perceptions of appearance.
