Shake Shack has responded to social media theories suggesting the fast-food chain raises prices on menu items for customers who do not leave a tip. The company stated that such a practice is not its policy nor that of its licensees.
The controversy gained traction after a TikTok video appeared to show prices increasing by $0.50 on orders at a Shake Shack location when the "no tip" option was selected. The video, which has since been widely shared, sparked customer disapproval and debate.
A spokesperson for Shake Shack clarified that the incident occurred at a location operated by licensee HMSHost and was due to an error in their kiosk technology. The company confirmed the issue has been resolved. "It is not Shake Shack policy, nor that of our licensees, to increase the price of menu items when no tip is added," the spokesperson stated via email.
The situation has reignited broader discussions in the US about tipping culture and the expectations placed on consumers to supplement wages through tips, often before service is rendered.
