Shanghai police dismantle AI-powered romance fraud network
Authorities in Shanghai have arrested a criminal group that used AI-generated imagery and psychological manipulation to defraud 15 victims of over 1.8 million yuan.
Police in Shanghai's Minhang district have dismantled a sophisticated criminal network that utilized artificial intelligence to conduct romance scams. Investigations revealed that the group successfully defrauded 15 individuals across China, netting over 1.8 million yuan in total.
The operation relied on a "seven-day script" designed to establish romantic rapport. Operators used AI-enhanced photos to pose as attractive women and followed detailed instructions on how to interact with targets to build trust. To filter out potential victims, the group initially requested small purchases, such as flower arrangements, before pivoting to complex emotional scams involving fabricated medical emergencies.
Authorities launched a coordinated crackdown across Guangdong, Shandong, and Guizhou provinces following a report from a victim who became suspicious when the fraudster repeatedly refused to engage in live video calls. The investigation uncovered a structured criminal organization that managed the victims.
The court has sentenced the members of the ring to various prison terms, with the lead perpetrators receiving up to 11 years of incarceration. The case serves as a warning regarding the malicious use of generative AI in social engineering and financial fraud.
