Shanghai police have dismantled a professional 'crash-for-cash' fraud network following a data-driven investigation. The specialized operation focused on patterns of intentional collisions that previously went undetected due to their small-scale, repetitive nature.

Investigators identified a primary suspect, surnamed Zhu, who operated across multiple districts. By targeting drivers during lane changes, the suspect manufactured minor accidents to extort small, immediate cash settlements. Police records indicate Zhu conducted as many as five such incidents in a single day.

Law enforcement utilized traffic surveillance footage, victim statements, and insurance claims to build a comprehensive case, overcoming the suspect's initial denial. Between 2025 and the time of his arrest, the suspect was linked to approximately 200 incidents, resulting in illicit gains totaling over 600,000 yuan.

Authorities have taken six suspects into custody as the investigation continues. Police advise drivers to avoid private settlements in suspicious accidents, particularly when the other party insists on bypassing official insurance protocols.
