Shanghai Starsky highlights moisture control requirements for ODPA in polyimide production
Shanghai Starsky New Material Co., Ltd. urges manufacturers to prioritize anhydride integrity in ODPA to maintain stoichiometric precision in polymer synthesis.

For manufacturers utilizing 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA) in polyimide synthesis, maintaining chemical integrity is as critical as achieving high purity. Shanghai Starsky New Material Co., Ltd. notes that while its ODPA is supplied at a minimum 99% purity, the reactive nature of anhydride groups requires strict moisture control to ensure consistency during polymerization.
Anhydrides are susceptible to hydrolysis when exposed to moisture, which converts the material into carboxylic acid forms. In step-growth polymerization, this transformation disrupts the stoichiometric balance between the dianhydride and diamine components. Because the molecular weight and structure of the final polyimide depend on this precise balance, hydrolyzed monomer can lead to unpredictable reaction outcomes.
Technical research suggests that monitoring monomer condition is essential for reproducible results in high-performance polymer applications. Shanghai Starsky advises that ODPA should be stored in sealed containers within cool, dry environments to prevent degradation. The company’s current product specifications for ODPA include a melting point range of 225–229°C and a minimum purity level of 99%.
