Shanghai Superconductor to Launch World's First Large-Scale High-Temperature Superconducting Tape Production Line
Shanghai Superconductor's new facility in Shanghai, set to be the world's first large-scale industrial production line for high-temperature superconducting tape, is scheduled to begin production in Q1 2027.

Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., Ltd. has announced a significant milestone with the completion of the main structure for its new facility, designed to produce the world's first three-kilometer-long high-temperature superconducting tape. The facility, located in Shanghai's Kangqiao Industrial Zone, is slated to commence production in the first quarter of 2027.
This project represents the largest planned production capacity in the superconducting materials sector globally. Upon reaching full operational capacity, the new plant will increase the company's total output to 20,000 kilometers annually, positioning it as the second-largest entity in the second-generation high-temperature superconducting tape segment worldwide. Currently, the company's annual capacity stands at 4,000 kilometers, making it one of only two suppliers capable of shipping over 1,000 kilometers of superconducting tape per year.
The new long-length superconducting tape is expected to enhance system reliability in downstream applications by significantly reducing the number of required joints. This advancement is crucial for applications such as winding large magnets and installing superconducting cables over extended distances. The project is designated as a major engineering project for Shanghai in 2025 and is a key component of the Zhangjiang Science City's industrial development.
The completion of the construction phase marks Shanghai Superconductor's transition into "large-scale industrial manufacturing," according to a company statement released on the occasion of its 15th anniversary. This development underscores the company's commitment to advancing and mass-producing superconducting materials.
