Shanxi Hosts Global Dialogue on Cultural Heritage

The International Cultural Heritage Protection Week 2026 concluded Tuesday in the ancient city of Yuci, Shanxi province, centered on the theme "Unity for Prosperity, Heritage for Eternity." The event served as a platform for global cultural exchange, gathering diplomats, international scholars, and heritage experts.

Discussions focused on the shared challenges of heritage preservation amid globalization and digital transformation, the role of youth in safeguarding cultural legacies, and innovative approaches to cross-border cultural initiatives. Shanxi province boasts significant cultural assets, including numerous well-preserved wooden structures dating back to the Tang and Yuan dynasties, with many designated as key national heritage sites.

A significant aspect of the week involved a tour recreating the 1937 discovery of Tang Dynasty wooden architecture. Participants examined tangible historical evidence, such as stone pillars and interior murals, to understand this pivotal moment in architectural archaeology.

Innovative digital technologies were employed at sites like the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, offering immersive virtual tours that allowed visitors to explore the structure's intricate details. Mian Abrar Hussain, a senior journalist from Pakistan Today, commented that China's use of virtual reality and digital tools in heritage conservation provides replicable models for the global community.
