Shanxi Hosts Global Dialogue on Cultural Heritage

The ancient city of Yuci in Jinzhong, Shanxi Province, concluded its International Cultural Heritage Week 2026 on Tuesday under the theme „Unity for Prosperity, Heritage for Eternity". The event served as a platform for global dialogue and heritage preservation.

The gathering brought together foreign diplomats, academic experts, and young creatives from around the world to foster intercultural communication. The program featured a grand opening ceremony, a light sculpture exhibition, and immersive intangible cultural heritage experiences. Three roundtable discussions addressed challenges in heritage conservation amid globalization and digital transformation, the role of youth in passing down heritage, and innovative approaches to cross-border cultural communication.

Shanxi is known for its rich historical and cultural assets, including significant architectural sites like Tang Dynasty-era wooden structures. Participants explored the region's historical architecture on a tour that retraced the discovery of Tang Dynasty wooden architecture. Visitors encountered tangible historical evidence such as Tang Dynasty stone pillars and inscriptions.

The event also utilized digital technologies, including virtual reality and immersive digital exhibitions, to bring ancient relics to life. At the Yingxian Wooden Tower, a digital exhibition allowed visitors to virtually ascend the tower. Mian Abrar Hussain, a senior journalist for Pakistan Today, noted that China is developing a replicable model for preserving and presenting cultural heritage to the global community through the use of digital tools.
