Shanxi hosts global heritage dialogue
Shanxi province hosted an International Cultural Heritage Week, bringing together global experts to discuss preservation challenges in a digital age. The event fostered intercultural communication and showcased innovative approaches to heritage dissemination.
Jinzhong, China – The 2026 International Cultural Heritage Week concluded in the ancient city of Yuci, Shanxi province, on July 23, serving as a platform for global dialogue on heritage preservation. The event, themed "Unity for Prosperity, Heritage for Eternity," convened diplomats, international scholars, cultural heritage specialists, and young creators.
The week featured an opening ceremony, light sculpture performances, and intangible cultural heritage experiences. Three thematic panel discussions addressed key issues such as the challenges of heritage preservation amid globalization and digital transformation, the role of youth in cultural inheritance, and innovative methods for cross-border cultural outreach.
Shanxi, recognized as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, boasts a wealth of cultural assets, including numerous ancient wooden structures dating back to the Tang and Yuan dynasties, alongside significant national key cultural relic protection sites. The discussions aimed to identify common challenges and opportunities for safeguarding these valuable historical resources.
As a complementary program, participants engaged in a guided tour focused on Shanxi's ancient Chinese architecture, including a visit to Foguang Temple. The event also highlighted the innovative use of digital technology, such as virtual reality experiences at the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, to revitalize ancient relics and enhance visitor engagement with cultural heritage.
