Shaquille O'Neal's Reebok Jacket May Have Cost Him Nike Offer
Shaquille O'Neal's agent sought to create a bidding war between Nike and Reebok, but O'Neal arriving at Nike headquarters in a Reebok jacket may have altered the outcome.

In the early stages of Shaquille O'Neal's career, agent Leonard Armato attempted to leverage the rivalry between Nike and Reebok to secure the most favorable footwear deal for the young basketball star. However, the plan encountered an unexpected obstacle when O'Neal arrived at Nike's headquarters wearing a jacket from the competing brand, Reebok.
Armato's strategy involved orchestrating a bidding war where Nike and Reebok would compete for O'Neal's endorsement. He arranged meetings with both companies to compare offers and negotiate the best terms. Reebok presented a substantial offer, which included a signature line, stock in the company, and, at Armato's insistence, ownership of O'Neal's own logo.
The situation became complicated when O'Neal, though beginning to lean towards Reebok, still wanted to hear Nike's offer out of respect. A week prior to meeting Nike, Reebok had gifted O'Neal a letterman jacket bearing their logo. When O'Neal subsequently arrived at Nike's main office still wearing this jacket, the incident may have negatively impacted Nike's interest in finalizing a deal.
Armato has since stated that this incident might have cost O'Neal a better long-term partnership with Nike. O'Neal himself has previously shared that for a time, he believed his size and image wouldn't translate to shoe marketing, but Armato's unwavering support gave him the confidence to proceed.
