Shenzhen pilots speed checks for electric bikes
Shenzhen traffic police have launched a pilot program using RFID technology to monitor and penalize speeding electric bicycles in the Luohu district. Initial results show reduced violations.

Shenzhen traffic police have initiated a pilot program to monitor electric bicycle speeds in the Luohu district, starting this July. The new system employs RFID technology to capture and penalize electric bikes exceeding speed limits on designated road segments.
The pilot is currently focused on the Sun-gang Rainbow Bridge section, equipped with smart devices for automatic data collection and violation capture. This initiative aims to enhance the detection of traffic offenses and curb violations by electric cyclists.
Early reports from the Rainbow Bridge test site indicate a decrease in electric bike violations and an overall improvement in traffic order. The traffic management department plans to gradually expand the scope of intelligent speed enforcement.
Meanwhile, Beijing has implemented "electronic police" systems to detect various offenses by electric cyclists, including lane violations, running red lights, distracted driving, illegal passenger transport, failure to wear helmets, and unauthorized modifications.
