Shield AI Agrees to $5.3 Billion Acquisition of Radar Maker Echodyne
Shield AI has reached a deal to acquire radar manufacturer Echodyne for up to $5.3 billion, backed by $2.5 billion in new funding.

Shield AI, a developer of autonomous flight software, has agreed to purchase radar producer Echodyne in a deal valued at up to $5.3 billion. The acquisition marks a significant move for Shield AI as it seeks to scale its hardware production and transition from a niche software provider to a broader prime contractor in the defense industry.
Alongside the acquisition, Shield AI secured $2.5 billion in new financing, including a $1 billion Series H round that values the company at $28.8 billion. CEO Gary Steele has signaled that further acquisitions are likely, as the company works to accelerate growth amidst increasing competition from international drone manufacturers and defense technology firms.
Since its inception, Shield AI has built its reputation on Hivemind, an AI-driven pilot software designed to operate drones and aircraft without reliance on GPS or human intervention. The acquisition of Echodyne provides the company with localized manufacturing capabilities in Washington, where it also plans to produce its autonomous X-BAT fighter jet.
The firm has previously acquired several smaller entities to bolster its capabilities in simulation and sensor technology. Industry analysts note that Shield AI is likely to target companies that provide specialized interfaces for manned-unmanned teaming, as well as firms specializing in space-based simulation to support their expanding autonomous aerospace portfolio.
