Shiprocket Expands Services Beyond Core Shipping

Indian e-commerce enablement platform Shiprocket is beginning to see returns from strategic investments made prior to its stock market listing earlier this year. The company is expanding its services beyond core shipping, demonstrating significant growth in these new areas.

Shiprocket traditionally helps online merchants ship orders by connecting them with various logistics providers. Over time, the company has broadened its offerings to include checkout solutions, omnichannel commerce, cross-border logistics, and marketing technology (martech). This strategy aims to generate revenue from multiple stages of each order lifecycle.

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (Q1 FY27), Shiprocket's revenue from operations increased by 34% year-over-year to ₹592.1 crore. While its core shipping business grew by 22%, its emerging segments—encompassing omnichannel, cross-border, and martech—collectively grew by 70% to ₹180.4 crore. Consequently, these new offerings now account for 30% of total revenue, up from 24% a year prior.

Marketing technology (martech) emerged as the fastest-growing segment, with revenues surging 193% year-over-year. Omnichannel revenue jumped 92%, while cross-border logistics saw a slight decline amid global economic volatility. The increasing contribution from these new services has lowered Shiprocket's average revenue per transaction, as they currently yield less than core shipping. The company's focus is on increasing transaction volumes before further monetizing them through its expanded product suite.

Shiprocket is betting on monetizing the entire journey of an e-commerce order, from customer acquisition and checkout to fulfillment, returns, and repeat purchases. Martech, including checkout and advertising tools, is central to this strategy. Leveraging over a decade of data on consumer behavior, the company assists merchants in improving their marketing outcomes. This approach aligns with a broader industry trend where digital platforms monetize data generated from their core operations.

The company's strategy also involves deepening engagement with its existing merchant base rather than solely relying on new customer acquisition for top-line growth. This has become more critical as customer acquisition costs (CAC) for its core shipping business have risen. Shiprocket serves approximately 222,000 merchants, and average revenue per high-value seller has increased. A larger proportion of core merchants are adopting Shiprocket's new services, although penetration remains relatively limited.

Despite substantial growth, Shiprocket's emerging segments remain unprofitable, although losses have narrowed. The company's core business continues to provide stable profitability, supporting investments in new ventures. The consolidated net loss significantly decreased during the quarter. Shiprocket now faces the challenge of persuading more merchants to adopt its expanded suite of tools, positioning it to compete against a wider array of players in e-commerce, marketing, and SaaS.
