Shopify CEO Names "Slop Grenade": New Workplace Problem in AI Era

Shopify CEO Tobias Lutke has identified a new workplace challenge, which he has termed the "slop grenade." This phenomenon occurs when employees utilize AI tools but fail to examine or refine the output, effectively shifting the actual work and responsibility of review onto their colleagues.

In a recent interview, Lutke explained that Shopify had encouraged employees to use AI, requiring proof that tasks could not be done with AI before approving new headcount. This policy has led to AI playing a significant role in code development, but it has also created the issue where AI-generated "slop"—unexamined or erroneous content—burdens others.

For instance, developers may approve AI-generated code changes without thorough review, leaving error correction to teammates. Similarly, using AI to draft lengthy emails without significant editing can result in the recipient needing another AI to extract the core message from the verbose output.

Lutke is not abandoning AI but emphasizes differentiating between AI that enhances an employee's thinking and AI that merely multiplies unvetted volume. Similar challenges have been noted at other companies, such as Duolingo, where widespread AI adoption has also surfaced comparable issues.
