Shopify enables AI agents to complete online purchases
E-commerce platform Shopify has opened its checkout functionalities to browser-based AI agents. The update allows AI to finalize purchases with buyer authorization, expanding its capabilities beyond adding items to the cart.

E-commerce platform Shopify has expanded its capabilities by allowing browser-based AI agents to complete purchases on its merchants' websites. This move enables AI to not only browse products and add them to a cart but also to handle the entire checkout process with the buyer's authorization.
Shopify previously supported the WebMCP (Web Merchant Checkout Protocol) for its storefronts and carts. The new update now extends this support to checkout functionalities, including Shop Pay. This allows AI agents to read checkout screen information, update it, and submit the transaction without relying on screenshots or scraping webpages.
In contrast to some retailers, such as Amazon, that have begun blocking AI agents from their platforms, Shopify is opting to integrate them into the shopping experience. This update is expected to streamline the purchasing process and open new avenues for customer service and personalized shopping journeys.
The expansion of the protocol to include checkout marks a significant step towards automated e-commerce. It lays the groundwork for more advanced AI applications that can assist customers with their shopping and management needs more seamlessly.
