The primary distinction, according to the company, lies in pulse duration. Nd:YAG lasers produce short, high-energy pulses in the nanosecond range. In contrast, picosecond lasers emit significantly shorter pulses, measured in picoseconds, which are trillionths of a second. This ultra-short pulse duration allows for more precise targeting of pigment and tattoo ink, leading to faster and more effective treatment outcomes.
Differences also exist in their mechanisms of action. The Nd:YAG laser works by delivering high-intensity light energy to shatter pigment particles in the skin, which are then gradually eliminated by the body's immune system. Picosecond lasers, conversely, utilize a photomechanical effect that directly breaks down pigment particles into smaller, more easily eliminated fragments.
