Singapore General Hospital Engineer Finds Calling in Equipment Specifications

Jolene Ho, a biomedical engineer at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), has spent more than a decade ensuring the safety and reliability of vital medical equipment, with a particular fondness for drafting tender specifications.

Ho, who holds a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, discovered her path in biomedical engineering during her studies. Her early aptitude was recognized when she ranked among the top participants in the electronics category at WorldSkills Singapore.

While many find the process of writing procurement specifications tedious, Ho embraces it as a learning opportunity. "I really like writing equipment tender specifications," she states. "This way, I get exposed to all kinds of equipment, learn what each is used for, and see how medical technology is advancing." She has witnessed advancements such as AI-powered endoscopy systems.

Ho is part of a 28-member team responsible for managing over 26,000 pieces of medical equipment at SGH. Their duties extend beyond documentation to include repairing broken machines, performing preventive maintenance, and commissioning new equipment. This ensures patient safety through precise calibration of devices like blood pressure monitors and electrical safety tests.

Despite challenges, such as accommodating urgent clinical needs and specifying complex laboratory equipment, Ho remains committed. Her dedication to maintaining the safety and functionality of medical technology has kept her at the hospital for over a decade.
