Singapore General Hospital Neurologist Integrates Acupuncture with Western Medicine

Professor Lin Shihui, a distinguished neurologist at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), has emerged as a key figure in integrating traditional Chinese acupuncture with Western medicine, particularly in his field of neurology and epilepsy. He is recognized as Singapore's first specialist trained in epilepsy and was instrumental in establishing SGH's acupuncture clinic.

Reflecting on his journey, Professor Lin shared his early academic struggles, especially with the English language, which nearly prevented him from pursuing specialist medical training abroad. Despite a challenging start, he has achieved significant success and aims to inspire others facing academic difficulties. "Even with poor grades and language barriers, I learned to leverage my strengths. It's crucial to remember that nothing is impossible if one focuses and applies the right methods," he stated.

Professor Lin's career is marked by pioneering achievements in Singapore's medical sector. He was the first Singaporean to train specifically in epilepsy and the nation's first certified specialist in clinical neurophysiology for electroencephalogram (EEG) studies. His work underscores a commitment to advancing patient care through diverse therapeutic approaches.

Beyond clinical practice, Professor Lin holds a leadership role as the Director of the Ministry of Health's Traditional and Complementary Medicine Division and serves as a registrar for the Chinese Medicine Practitioner Board. He also contributes to medical education as a professor at two medical faculties within the National University of Singapore. His vision extends to establishing a comprehensive hospital offering integrated Western and traditional Chinese medicine treatments, aiming to provide holistic patient care.

Professor Lin's dedication has earned him multiple accolades, including the National Medical Excellence Award. His journey highlights the potential for success through perseverance, adaptability, and a willingness to bridge different medical disciplines for the benefit of patients.
