Singapore General Hospital Opens Regional Training Hub for Robotic Surgery

Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has established a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to robotic-assisted surgery. The facility will train orthopaedic surgeons from across Southeast Asia, ensuring they are equipped with knowledge of emerging technologies as the region's population ages and surgical demands evolve.

The centre is part of a two-year strategic collaboration with Johnson & Johnson MedTech, focusing initially on training and research in total knee replacement procedures. SGH stated that this initiative will position Singapore as a hub for advanced surgical training, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and learning best practices.

Functioning as a regional training destination, the CoE will host comprehensive programmes and preceptorship sessions. The collaboration involves developing training curricula, utilizing advanced robotic technology within state-of-the-art facilities, and conducting research to improve patient outcomes and surgical efficiency.

SGH currently performs over 2,500 total knee replacement procedures annually, with demand projected to rise significantly due to an aging population. The hospital aims to improve surgical standards in the region by equipping surgeons with advanced skills in robotic-assisted procedures.
