Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has received recognition for its meritorious surgical patient care outcomes in 2020, as part of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). The program uses evidence-based measures developed by surgeons to evaluate the quality of surgical patient results.

SGH was among 90 hospitals commended out of 706 evaluated institutions. The recognition is based on clinical data collected from patient charts 30 days post-surgery, with risk adjustments to account for differences in patient populations and acuity levels.

"Participating in the NSQIP is an important way to safeguard our patients' well-being by significantly improving the quality of our care," stated Associate Professor Tan Hiang Khoon, Chairman of the Division of Surgery and Surgical Oncology at SGH. "We wanted a methodology that uses robust, actionable data to measure and improve the quality of our patient care. The NSQIP fits the bill, as it is developed by surgeons who understand the realities of the operating theatre."

SGH was assessed and recognised in the 'high risk' category. The hospital performs nearly 10,000 day and inpatient surgeries annually, allowing its surgeons' skills to be continually sharpened, leading to better patient outcomes.
