Singapore Man Charged Over AI-Generated Crocodile Reservoir Image

A man in Singapore has been charged with creating and spreading an AI-generated image that falsely depicted a crocodile attack on a reservoir. The charges stem from the creation and distribution of the image, which led to an unnecessary search operation by authorities. The case, where a man named Ye Lin used Google's Gemini AI to generate the image, highlights the risks associated with the dissemination of AI-generated content.
The man shared the AI-created image with a colleague, from where it rapidly spread online. The image prompted the Singapore National Water Agency PUB to report a crocodile sighting in the Pandan Reservoir. PUB, along with the National Parks Board, initiated a search that proved fruitless after the image was revealed to be fake. PUB subsequently reported the incident to the police, and the accused attempted to delete the image and its creation records from his device.
Ye Lin faces charges for spreading false information and for subsequently deleting photos, thereby obstructing justice. Singapore Police have stated they adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone spreading false information. The accused is scheduled to appear in court again in November.
If convicted on both counts, the man could face a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of S$10,000 (approximately US$7,300). The case raises questions about the use of AI and accountability in digital communication.
