Singapore's Open Government Products Develops Products in Startup Style

Singapore's Open Government Products (OGP) has developed over 40 products for the public sector since its establishment in 2019. The unit operates within the government bureaucracy with an agile approach, akin to a startup, aiming to solve significant problems with limited resources.

Director Li Hongyi described product development in the public sector as "fighting with sticks and rocks," highlighting the team's ability to discontinue projects with lower success rates and focus on more promising initiatives. This approach is crucial in a public sector environment where resources are constrained compared to large tech corporations.

Li, who previously worked at Google, drew parallels and distinctions between product management at a large tech firm and OGP. He noted that while large companies solve minor issues with abundant global resources, OGP tackles substantial societal challenges with a considerably smaller arsenal.

OGP's efforts have resulted in practical applications for citizens, including tools for paying parking fees, redeeming government vouchers, and booking public sports facilities, demonstrating the unit's commitment to improving daily life through technology.
