A new analysis reveals that companies' efforts to establish a Single Source of Truth (SSOT) typically fail due to a lack of business alignment, rather than deficiencies in the technology investments themselves.

Initiatives aimed at consolidating data into a central system demand substantial resources and can falter if an organization fails to standardize how data is defined and used across different departments. For example, one financial services firm's $4 million investment in an SSOT platform proved insufficient because various departments used and reported data differently.

A primary reason for failure is that organizations focus on technology while neglecting underlying business processes and interpersonal consensus. Different departments' metrics and data definitions, such as sales and finance having differing concepts of a "customer" or "transaction," lead to conflicts and mistrust of the central system.

Preparation for an SSOT project should begin with designing governance principles, not selecting technology vendors.
