Sinopec publishes its first global biodiversity conservation report

Sinopec, the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, presented its first global biodiversity conservation report during the COP17 meeting in Yerevan on October 29. The document details how the company is incorporating biodiversity protection into its corporate governance, industrial operations, and international projects.

The energy firm has integrated biodiversity metrics into its health, safety, and environment (HSE) management systems. By the end of 2025, the company had decommissioned nearly 1,000 oil and gas wells, as well as various storage facilities, as part of efforts to restore local habitats and reduce operational footprints.

The report highlights several site-specific projects, including the repurposing of industrial depots into wildlife education centers along the Yangtze River and restoration initiatives in Uganda, Ecuador, and Australia. Additionally, the company is focusing on technological investments, such as large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects and the production of biodegradable materials.
