Sisu Auto to launch hydrogen-electric hybrid truck pilot in 2026
Sisu Auto will begin a pilot project in late 2026 to test a hydrogen-electric hybrid powertrain for heavy-duty long-haul transport in Finland.
Finnish vehicle manufacturer Sisu Auto is set to launch a pilot project testing hydrogen and electric hybrid technology for heavy-duty long-haul transport. Commencing in late 2026, the project aims to address the technical requirements for zero-emission heavy freight.
The initiative focuses on bridging the performance gap in current zero-emission solutions. While battery-electric vehicles are suitable for shorter routes, the hybrid model uses a fuel cell to extend range and maintain power for heavy payloads, aiming to align with European Union emissions regulations for road freight.
The pilot will serve as a testing ground for integrating hydrogen infrastructure with heavy transport operations in Nordic conditions. The company plans to use data from the project to refine the hybrid powertrain before potential commercial scale-up.
