South Korean semiconductor manufacturer SK Hynix is exploring a shift in its business model for memory chips, potentially introducing a 'memory-as-a-service' (MaaS) offering, according to a Bloomberg report. This new approach would allow customers to rent access to memory chips rather than making direct purchases.

Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, indicated in an interview with Bloomberg Television that the company could become a provider of storage services. He suggested this as a potential future strategic direction, drawing parallels to existing 'as-a-service' models in the tech industry, such as software-as-a-service (SaaS).

The announcement follows SK Hynix's recent capital raise of $2.65 billion through a U.S. stock offering. While specific operational details for the proposed MaaS were not disclosed, Chairman Chey mentioned the necessity for new software to support the model and address storage capacity bottlenecks.

This potential move by SK Hynix aligns with a broader industry trend toward service-based models, where customers pay based on usage rather than owning large upfront capital investments. The company aims to tackle challenges related to storage capacity through this innovative approach.
