Skydance Completes $81 Billion Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery
Skydance-owned Paramount has officially closed its $81 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal merges two of Hollywood's oldest film studios and a vast array of media properties.

Skydance-owned Paramount has officially completed its $81 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal, finalized on Tuesday, creates a new media giant under the streamlined name "Skydance." This merger unites two of America's historic film studios, bringing together properties such as HBO Max, the Harry Potter franchise, and CNN with Paramount+ and CBS.
The combined entity will be led by billionaire David Ellison and his new co-CEO, Ynon Kreiz. This move further consolidates power within an industry already dominated by a few major players. Ellison's Skydance acquired Paramount itself just last year for $8 billion, quickly setting its sights on the larger Warner entity.
The acquisition followed a turbulent, year-long battle for Warner's future. Including billions in debt, the total value of the Warner acquisition reaches nearly $111 billion. "Today is a historic day, not just for Skydance but for our entire industry," Ellison stated.
The process involved a complex bidding war. Warner initially agreed to a studio and streaming deal with Netflix. However, Skydance launched a counterbid to acquire the entire company. After months of negotiation and competitive offers, Netflix withdrew, leading to a merger agreement between Warner and Skydance in late February.
The merger has drawn mixed reactions from Hollywood. Many creatives expressed concerns about potential job losses and reduced audience choice. Conversely, some industry figures, like director James Cameron, have voiced support for Ellison's plans for the company.
