Small Pilot Orders Benefit Seasonal Lantern Buyers
Chinese manufacturer Ningbo Mengting advises seasonal outdoor product buyers on the importance of smaller pilot orders. A 300-unit test order can be preferable to a 3,000-unit commitment.

Ningbo Mengting Outdoor Implement Co., LTD., a Chinese manufacturer specializing in outdoor products, has released guidance addressing minimum order quantity (MOQ) negotiations, particularly for seasonal buyers.
The company suggests that a 300-unit pilot order can be strategically superior to a 3,000-unit commitment when the goal is to test demand without significant capital outlay. This approach is especially relevant for new products, such as camping lanterns, where market sales have not yet been established.
According to Ningbo Mengting, seasonal buyers should focus on negotiating the smallest quantity the factory can profitably schedule on its production line, rather than fixating on round numbers from a price sheet. The factory's extensive OEM/ODM experience allows for flexibility with smaller batches, provided the production line is otherwise booked for repeat orders.
Negotiations should be comprehensive, covering terms for both the pilot order and subsequent reorders. This ensures that the supplier who successfully navigates the initial test phase also benefits from continued business. It is also crucial to confirm that all orders include necessary documentation, such as CE and RoHS certifications, as required by the destination market.
The company emphasizes that 3,000-unit orders are only justifiable once a product has proven its sales performance over two seasons and its consistent sales velocity warrants a large inventory investment.
