Smallpdf Sells PDF Tools Unit to Focus on Editing Software

Smallpdf AG, a Swiss company known for its PDF software suite, announced on July 14, 2026, the sale of its subsidiary, PDF Tools, to Apryse, a global leader in document processing technology.

PDF Tools, acquired by Smallpdf in March 2022, specializes in high-performance PDF processing software and developer SDKs. During its time with Smallpdf, the company doubled its revenue and expanded its product offerings, including the AI Smart Redact feature for sensitive data removal. The sale enables PDF Tools to integrate into Apryse's larger ecosystem, benefiting from global support and expanded capabilities.

This strategic move allows Smallpdf to fully dedicate its resources to enhancing its own popular PDF editing software, which serves millions of users monthly. Moritz Werner, CEO of Smallpdf, stated that the sale provides an excellent outcome for both businesses, enabling Apryse to broaden its product offering and global footprint while Smallpdf sharpens its focus on its user-facing platform.

Cassidy Smirnow, CEO of Apryse, highlighted the value PDF Tools brings in specialized areas like PDF/A conversion and compression, further enhancing Apryse's offerings for enterprise customers and developers. The integration is expected to set a new standard in document processing performance and quality.
