Smart Wearables for Early Detection of Heart Disease
A new AI-supported sensor system developed by Fraunhofer IZM aims to detect early warning signs of heart disease more accurately using wearable devices.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM have developed an intelligent sensor system that aims to detect early warning signs of heart disease with greater accuracy. The system utilizes AI and is integrated into two types of wearable devices: a textile vest and biocompatible sensor patches. Heart disease is a significant cause of death worldwide. Early symptoms, such as fatigue or shortness of breath, are often nonspecific, leading individuals to delay seeking medical attention. Current methods for comprehensive heart monitoring can be time-consuming and cumbersome. This new system wirelessly measures numerous cardiac and circulatory parameters in real time. These include body temperature, respiratory rate, heart and lung sounds, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and key indicators of heart function. It also incorporates subjective patient data and previous medical history. The collected data is processed by artificial intelligence, which identifies early disease patterns and suggests treatment recommendations. Researchers anticipate this system will enhance diagnostic precision and facilitate timely medical intervention. Clinical trials for the devices are planned.
