Smartphone SoC shipments fall 21% in Q3 2026 as market contraction continues
Global smartphone processor shipments experienced a 21% year-over-year decline in the third quarter of 2026, according to new data from Counterpoint Research.
The global smartphone system-on-chip (SoC) market contracted significantly in the third quarter of 2026. Counterpoint Research reported a 21% year-over-year decline in shipments, highlighting ongoing cooling demand within the mobile hardware sector.
Market share dynamics shifted as vertically integrated firms gained ground. Qualcomm maintained a lead with 22% of the market, though Apple narrowed the gap significantly, reaching 21%. Conversely, MediaTek saw its market share decline to 28% from 34% in the previous quarter, while Samsung grew to 8%.
Rising memory costs continue to influence manufacturing strategies. While memory price growth slowed to 5โ10% in the third quarter, some budget-tier manufacturers have begun adopting recycled memory components to manage bill-of-materials costs. However, analysts note that technical constraints in packaging integration limit the widespread use of such components.
Industry analysts project the downward trend will persist, with full-year 2026 shipments expected to drop by 20% compared to 2025. A further decline of 3โ4% is anticipated for 2027 as the market adjusts to persistent inflationary pressures and cooling consumer demand.
