Snake Robots Deployed in Venezuela Earthquake Search Efforts
Robotic snake-like devices equipped with cameras were used to search for survivors in collapsed buildings following twin earthquakes in Venezuela.
Snake-like robots were deployed to search for survivors in the rubble of buildings collapsed by two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. The disaster resulted in over 5,000 fatalities and left more than 16,700 injured.
These robots offered a technological advantage to international search and rescue teams by navigating confined spaces within debris that conventional methods could not reach. Equipped with video cameras, the snakebots were able to extend the visual reach of rescue workers into dangerous areas safely.
Howie Choset, head of the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, stated that the robots' ability to access tightly packed volumes inaccessible to machinery and people is crucial for search and rescue operations. He compared their function to performing minimally invasive surgery on a structure.
The use of such specialized robotic technology highlights the evolving methods employed in disaster response, augmenting traditional techniques like search dogs and listening devices.
