Snap settles social media addiction lawsuit

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has reached a preliminary settlement in a lawsuit that claims social media platforms are harmful to children and young adults. The agreement was finalized ahead of a jury trial scheduled to begin later this month in Los Angeles.

The settlement follows a similar resolution by TikTok in the same litigation. TikTok had previously settled its portion of the case with the plaintiff, identified as "R.K.C.," to avoid a trial. This leaves Meta as the sole remaining defendant in the consolidated case.

Several social media giants, including Meta and Google (YouTube's parent company), have faced similar legal challenges. Meta has previously lost cases related to child safety, including a trial in New Mexico and another in Los Angeles where a jury awarded damages.

These legal precedents are driving increased scrutiny of social media platforms regarding their impact on young users. The outcomes may lead to platform redesigns, enhanced child safety features, and algorithmic adjustments to mitigate potential harm and avoid future litigation.
