Social Media Companies Employ AI and Face Scans to Identify Children
Meta and other tech giants are increasingly using artificial intelligence and facial scanning to detect underage users on their platforms, driven by regulatory pressure and child safety concerns.

Social media companies including Meta, Google, TikTok, and Roblox are expanding their use of artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies to identify child users across their platforms. These measures come in response to growing regulatory scrutiny and heightened concerns about online child safety.
Meta's recent $18 billion legal settlement with 48 U.S. states and territories mandates significant improvements in the company's age verification technologies. The Menlo Park, California-based company has one year to refine its approach, which could potentially set new industry standards.
The technological push involves leveraging AI for age estimation. These systems analyze user activity, including posts, likes, comments, friend networks, and login times. Meta also employs image analysis to identify visual cues that can help estimate a user's age without requiring direct identity verification.
Some services, such as Roblox, may ask users to take a video selfie for age assessment. While facial scanning can be accurate for certain age ranges, concerns have been raised about its reliability and privacy implications. Meta and other platforms have also suggested that app store owners should handle age verification, a proposal met with opposition from Apple and Google.
Protecting user privacy remains a key challenge. Age verification systems often necessitate the disclosure of sensitive personal information, raising concerns about the erosion of internet freedom and privacy.
