Social Security Benefit Changes Expected in 2027

The Social Security Administration is anticipating changes to its benefit programs for 2027. While official details are expected on October 14, discussions are already underway regarding the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and the full retirement age.

AARP estimates, based on current inflation trends, a potential 3.5% cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security benefits in 2027. This projection suggests an average monthly increase of approximately $73 for retirees. The official COLA figure will be released after the Consumer Price Index report on October 14.

Recent COLA increases have been more modest. Benefits for millions of Americans rose by 2.8% in 2026 and 2.5% in 2025. Over the past decade, the average annual COLA has been 3.1%.

The full retirement age is currently set at 67 for individuals reaching age 62 in 2026, according to the Social Security Administration. Experts confirm that this age is not expected to increase under current law. While individuals can claim benefits as early as age 62, the full benefit amount is contingent upon reaching the full retirement age. Delaying benefits beyond this age up to age 70 results in a higher monthly payment.

Concerns persist regarding the long-term solvency of the Social Security system. Trustees' reports indicate that without legislative action, the system could face insolvency as early as the fourth quarter of 2032.
