Mary Gates, 59, reportedly stopped receiving her Social Security disability benefits for months after her work-study job ended, leading to missed payments and financial hardship.
The issue eventually required intervention from Legal Aid DC, which took four months to resolve. A senior staff attorney noted that reinstating disability benefits after employment should not necessitate legal assistance, raising concerns about the agency's processes.
These delays may be linked to substantial staffing cuts at the Social Security Administration (SSA). The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reported that the SSA has reduced its workforce by over 8,000 employees, or 13-14%, marking the largest single-year reduction on record and leaving the agency with fewer employees than at any point since 1967.
Gates' situation is one among millions who rely on Social Security. The program, established in 1940, faces long-term financial challenges. Reports indicate that without legislative action, beneficiaries could see benefit reductions as early as 2032 to address projected funding shortfalls.
