Sociologist: Real-life Encounters Crucial Despite Digital Connectivity

Munich – Despite extensive digital connectivity, many individuals report experiencing loneliness. According to sociologist Vidar Halldorsson, this phenomenon stems from a decline in real-life, face-to-face encounters. Even brief interactions, such as a chat with a neighbor or a greeting on the street, are crucial for fostering trust, empathy, and community, he explains.

In his new book, "How Digital Screen Use Alienates Human Societies," Halldorsson warns that digital communication is increasingly displacing genuine human interactions. He describes this as a paradox: digital networks promise greater connection but may simultaneously diminish authentic human closeness. The sociologist refers to this as "social magic," an intangible quality that arises from direct, in-person engagement.

Digital communication often omits vital social cues present in face-to-face conversations. Halldorsson points to subtle facial expressions, body language, proximity, and touch as examples of these cues. These signals aid in understanding others' moods and anticipating reactions. He highlights that developing an understanding of social situations relies on repeated encounters rather than isolated intense interactions.

Halldorsson considers small, everyday interaction rituals—like neighborly greetings or brief exchanges in queues—as foundational elements of community. He suggests the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this trend, with virtual meetings and remote connections replacing many physical gatherings. While technological solutions are convenient, he argues they cannot fully substitute for real-world interactions, which provide a deeper sense of belonging and identity.
