SoftBank completes final $10b investment in OpenAI

SoftBank Group announced on October 1 that it has completed the final $10 billion tranche of its planned investment in artificial intelligence company OpenAI. This tranche is part of a larger investment program.

The investment finalizes SoftBank's total commitment of $30 billion to OpenAI. The cumulative investment by SoftBank in OpenAI now stands at $64.6 billion, with the company holding approximately a 13% ownership stake.

SoftBank funded the latest investment tranche using proceeds from senior notes denominated in foreign currency, which were announced in September. The company also cancelled the remaining $10 billion in undrawn capacity under a bridge loan facility. Following these actions, SoftBank stated that no borrowings or undrawn commitments remain under that facility.

This investment expands the broader relationship between SoftBank and OpenAI, which also includes the expansion of Stargate AI infrastructure and support for an SB Energy partnership. OpenAI has concurrently been reported to be seeking a significant $110 billion funding round.
