Solar Eclipse Drives Surge in Travel to Spain and Iceland

Travel technology company Amadeus reports that the total solar eclipse occurring in August 2026 is driving a substantial increase in travel bookings to Spain and Iceland. Flight bookings to airports along the eclipse path, including those in Spain and Iceland, have risen by 25% compared to the same period in 2025. This eclipse is noted as the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in over 120 years, marking it as a significant event for the region.

Data from Amadeus's Demand360® service for the week of August 9–16, 2026, indicates that the heightened demand is translating into higher booking levels and room rates compared to the previous year. Hotels in Spain and Iceland are seeing occupancy rates increase by 16%, with the Average Daily Rate (ADR) rising by 36%.

Bilbao experienced the largest increase in flight demand at +366%, with travelers from the United States leading long-haul inbound travel. Other Spanish destinations showing significant growth include Asturias (+292%) and Valencia (+137%). International demand spans multiple continents, with Japan, Argentina, and Canada being key origin markets alongside the US.

Wider travel patterns suggest a rise in shorter trips, between one to five days, which increased by 57%. This indicates visitors are aligning their travel dates specifically around the eclipse window. Group bookings of two travelers have increased by 18%, and solo travel is up by 48%, pointing to strong demand from both couples and independent travelers.

Amadeus suggests that major astronomical events can create powerful motivations for travel, offering destinations and hotels opportunities to maximize revenue. Utilizing data-driven insights allows industry stakeholders to anticipate booking trends and optimize pricing strategies.
