Sonos has announced a significant update to its audio system with the release of Sonos 27. The update, distributed through the Apple App Store, introduces advanced features including external AI integration and enhanced home theater capabilities.

A key new feature is the early access to connect with external AI models like ChatGPT and Claude via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This allows users to adjust playback and sound controls directly within the AI platform without switching to the Sonos app. Sonos hosts this service, enabling users to select their preferred AI assistant.

Looking ahead, Sonos plans to launch an early access version of Sonos 27voice in late fall 2026. This internally developed voice assistant will understand descriptive requests for music, such as mood or lyrical clues, even if song titles or artists are forgotten. By 2027, the company aims to introduce Sonos Custom Agents, allowing users to create personalized AI agents with custom models and personalities.

The Sonos 27 system also adds Portable Surrounds, allowing two identical Sonos portable speakers to pair with compatible soundbars as rear surround channels. These speakers automatically revert to their portable role when moved. The updated Sonos app features a redesigned navigation interface with swipe gestures and room pinning to streamline access to common controls.
