Sony and UMG Sue Suno Again Over Copyright Infringement

Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group have again sued AI music service Suno, alleging copyright infringement.

The music giants claim that Suno's newly released v6 model is still trained on copyrighted material. According to the complaint, Suno trains its new model on outputs from previous versions, which were themselves trained on unlicensed music allegedly scraped from YouTube and other sources.

Sony and Universal are notable holdouts who have not signed licensing agreements with Suno. In their filing, the labels accuse Suno of "model laundering," asserting that training a new model on the outputs of an infringing model does not eliminate the infringement but rather obscures it.

The lawsuit highlights the ongoing tensions between the music industry and AI companies regarding the use of copyrighted music in AI training and ownership of AI-generated content.

The record labels are seeking legal recourse to halt Suno's continued alleged use of their music and are demanding damages for the infringement.
