Sony introduces MDR-3R headphones inspired by 1979 Walkman design
Sony is set to release the MDR-3R in November 2026, a USB-C wired headphone model that revives the lightweight design and 23 mm driver specifications of the 1979 original.

Sony is launching the MDR-3R, a wired headphone model designed to mirror the form factor of the original 1979 MDR-3 series. By utilizing a USB-C interface, the headphones provide plug-and-play connectivity for compatible devices, bypassing the need for wireless pairing or battery charging. The device features 23 mm drivers and includes a built-in microphone for voice calls.
In addition to the standard model, Sony will offer a Stranger Things Edition. This variant features aesthetic elements inspired by the Netflix series and the 1980s period setting. Approximately 25% of the plastic content in the headphone housing is sourced from recycled materials.
The MDR-3R is scheduled for release in November 2026. The standard model will retail for €59, while the Stranger Things Edition will be priced at €69.
