Sony Music and Warner Chappell have filed a lawsuit against AI company Anthropic, alleging the use of tens of thousands of copyrighted works without permission. The music publishers seek significant damages.
Music giants Sony Music and Warner Chappell have sued AI developer Anthropic in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The companies accuse Anthropic of infringing on copyrights by using "tens of thousands" of their works in training AI models.
The plaintiffs are seeking damages of up to $150,000 per copyrighted work infringed. Additionally, they are requesting up to $25,000 for each instance where identifiable copyright management information was allegedly stripped from the works. If awarded the maximum amounts, the total damages could reach billions of dollars.
This lawsuit marks the latest high-profile legal challenge against Anthropic concerning its AI training data. The company recently settled a separate lawsuit brought by the publishing industry for $1.5 billion over similar allegations.
The case highlights the ongoing legal battles over the use of copyrighted material in the development of generative artificial intelligence and could set important precedents for the industry.
