Sony's disc manufacturing facility in Tals, Austria, will significantly reduce its production of PlayStation discs by 2028, shifting its focus to the manufacturing of optical micro-lenses. Dietmar Tanzer, president of Sony's disc manufacturing business, announced that the factory's output will decrease to about 10% of its current daily production of 600,000 discs.

The roughly 300 employees at the Tals plant will undergo retraining to adapt to the new manufacturing process. This transition is not sudden; behind-the-scenes footage from 2024 indicated that the factory was already involved in producing micro-lenses. Sony plans to invest approximately $30 million to establish the micro-lens production line, with mass production expected as early as next year.

The Tals facility is Sony's sole wholly-owned disc production base. The company previously operated disc manufacturing in the United States, but those plants have since closed or been repurposed. For instance, a former plant in Indiana, initially for discs, now assembles components like headlights for automotive manufacturers.

This strategic shift reflects broader industry trends toward digital distribution and away from physical media. Sony has previously confirmed that new games for PlayStation consoles will cease to be released on physical discs starting in 2028.
