Sony revives 1979 Walkman headphones with modern USB-C connectivity

Sony has launched the MDR-3R, a modern iteration of its classic 1979 headphones, replacing the 3.5mm jack with USB-C and adding microphone support.

5 November 2026

Sony has officially released the MDR-3R, a wired headset that mirrors the aesthetic of the 1979 MDR-3L2 headphones originally sold with the first Walkman. The new model retains the lightweight headband and iconic orange ear pads while integrating updated connectivity features.

The most significant change is the transition from a 3.5mm analog connector to a USB-C interface. This change allows for direct connection to modern smartphones without the need for adapters, Bluetooth pairing, or battery power. The updated version also features an in-line microphone and playback controls.

Audio is managed by 23mm drivers tuned to replicate the sound profile of the original model. In addition to the standard release, priced at $59.99, Sony has introduced a collaborative Stranger Things special edition featuring unique color schemes, which will retail for $79.99.
