Sony to discontinue physical PlayStation game discs in January 2028
Sony has announced it will cease production of physical game discs for its PlayStation consoles starting January 2028. New games will be available digitally, reflecting a shift in consumer preference.

Sony will stop producing physical game discs for its PlayStation consoles in January 2028, the company announced. Following this date, new game releases will be available exclusively in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and at retailers.
The company stated the decision is a "natural direction" driven by consumer trends, as the preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. During Sony's fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, digital downloads accounted for 78 percent of full-game unit purchases, up from 76 percent in fiscal year 2024.
The move has raised concerns among some gamers regarding the future of game ownership. The industry's broader transition towards digital distribution has been evident for years, with many console manufacturers increasingly focusing on their digital storefronts.
Sony is expected to continue investing in and expanding its digital offerings to align with evolving consumer habits.
