The company stated the decision is a "natural direction" driven by consumer trends, as the preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. During Sony's fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, digital downloads accounted for 78 percent of full-game unit purchases, up from 76 percent in fiscal year 2024.
The move has raised concerns among some gamers regarding the future of game ownership. The industry's broader transition towards digital distribution has been evident for years, with many console manufacturers increasingly focusing on their digital storefronts.
