Sony updates classic MDR-3 Walkman headphones with USB-C support

Sony has reintroduced its MDR-3 series headphones, originally released alongside the Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player in 1979. The updated model retains the signature 1970s aesthetic, characterized by an adjustable plastic headband and orange foam ear cushions.

While the visual design remains largely unchanged, Sony has integrated USB-C connectivity into the device. This modification allows the vintage-style hardware to function with modern audio equipment and mobile devices, bridging the gap between retro hardware and contemporary standards.

These lightweight, on-ear headphones contrast sharply with current market trends, which favor bulky, heavily cushioned over-ear headsets designed for active noise cancellation. The release targets the niche segment of consumers interested in heritage audio products with modernized utility.
